BAYLY COMMUNICATIONS COMPLETES $6 MILLION OVERLAY PROJECT WITH Rogers WIRELESS TORONTO - Bayly Communications Inc., (www.bayly.com), a leading manufacturer of network access and transmission products for worldwide telecommunications markets, is completing the second phase of an 18-month GSM overlay project with Rogers Wireless (www.rogers.com). Rogers Wireless completed the roll out of its leading edge GSM/GPRS network to more than 93 per cent of the Canadian population in May 2002. "We have worked closely with Rogers Wireless' engineering team over these several months to provide our OMNIFlex digital cross-connect units for its national GSM overlay," says Bayly's President Bruce Friendship. "Having a solid understanding of their network design and engineering challenges, we played a multifaceted technical, advisory, procurement and supply role en route to deploying our optimization solution in record time." During the engineering design phase, Rogers Wireless recognized changes to their backhaul network would be required to support the additional bandwidth requirements of the GSM base stations. Bayly's engineering group consulted with the Rogers Wireless team to define technical requirements, deployment time targets and address unique issues such as packaging and connectorization. Rogers Wireless chose OMNIFlex to groom and aggregate circuits, perform line code conversion to support legacy equipment and to optimize existing bandwidth. As a result, the GSM network was built without increasing the bandwidth of the existing backhaul network. OMNIFlex is a TDM access platform combining T1 digital cross-connect switching, CSU/DSU functionality, data multiplexing and voice compression into a compact, highly integrated package. OMNIFlex is ideally suited to edge-of-network grooming and optimization applications. Wireless carriers appreciate OMNIFlex for its small size, low power consumption, front access and temperature hardening. OMNIFlex is ideal for installation in all base station cabinets. "Over the years, Rogers needed to save money and expand services," adds Friendship. "Today, they truly consider us an extension of their engineering team. Relying on us for their edge-of-network optimization strategy demonstrates the confidence they have in our engineering experience and our products." "We chose Bayly Communications because of the Company's responsiveness, product reliability and solid technical expertise," says Bob Berner, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. "Bayly Communications was able to customize its OMNIFlex solution by adding features and capabilities that created added efficiencies to our GSM overlay." Bayly Communications partnered with Rogers Wireless in the mid-80s to build Rogers Wireless' analogue wireless network using the OMNIPlexer multiplex equipment. The two companies worked together again in between 1990 and 1995 on the Rogers Wireless PCS overlay which used the OMNIBranch digital cross-connect switch. About Bayly Communications Inc.
