Electric utility networks have stringent telecom requirements and carry a mixture of critical traffic (Teleprotection, SCADA, Alarm and Monitor) as well as voice traffic (PBX extensions, mobile radio systems, maintenance), data traffic (LAN, terminal to mainframe connectivity) and video traffic (surveillance and security). Additionally, network delay times must be low to ensure correct operation of protective relaying equipment. Ring, Point-to-point and linear drop/insert architectures are often used to create networks linking substations and power distribution systems to a monitoring centre.
